Conversations to Contracts is almost here! Our biannual trade show was created to connect small and diverse-owned businesses with potential trade partners, procurement professionals, and financial partners. These alliances are crucial in stimulating economic activity and diversifying supply chains, and our tradeshow helps make it happen!

Genesis Block hosts Conversations to Contracts events in partnership with state, local government agencies, anchor institutions and corporate partners. The goal is to connect minority owned businesses with contracting opportunities and to provide them with the resources necessary to strengthen their ventures.

Block Eatz Catering officially launched in January 2024 and it enables entrepreneurs to experiment with their catering concepts via bookings through Block Eatz.

Chef’s Vision is a monthly meetup event intended to bring the local food entrepreneurship and innovation community together for networking, introduction of new concepts, industry insights, brand development and business expansion. The event is held at Block Eatz in the McKeithan Center on the north campus of Cape Fear Community College.

Genesis Block is excited to announce the 2nd annual Genesis Block HerStory Event in partnership with Common Desk and Wilmington Downtown Inc. Last year, the Genesis Block HerStory event drew a large audience of the region’s best female entrepreneurs, women owned businesses and professionals. The 2024 Genesis Block HerStory event will include new features as well as recognizing the accomplishments and achievements of women entrepreneurs and business owners in the Wilmington area.

Genesis Block is partnering with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Office of Civil Rights to create and maintain a database of DBE contractors who are qualified and capable of mobilizing for cleanup efforts to respond to disasters across the state. The project is called Ready, Willing, and Able (RWA) highlighting the need for qualified diverse owned businesses to support NCDOT disaster related operations.

The new year is here and so is our first Jumpstart Academy cohort of 2024! This program imparts lean business development principles and offers invaluable mentoring developed through monthly consultations. Jumpstart Academy is the launchpad to turn business dreams into a validated idea.

According to research from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 60% of food businesses fail within their first year of operation. Even more alarming is that 80% of food businesses fail within 5 years of operation. These numbers relate to national trends but should be evaluated with deeper analysis by new founders, business owners, local economic development policy makers and community stakeholders.
